The Ultimate Noob Question

Where do files install themselves in Linux?

I've recently installed Opera and Wine and I have no clue where to find either of them....

Usually, the executable is placed in /usr/bin. They stick libraries and config files in other dirs, but usually in the generic path so that anyone can execute them. That said, in a console

locate opera |more
locate wine |more

usually /usr/local/bin
/usr/bin
/usr/sbin

Just try typing the command from the prompt, chances are it's in your path.

BTW
Code:
whereis opera (or whatever)
works pretty well

In it's most basic form,
wine <MSAPP.EXE>
be it setup.exe, etc.
Of course, it is NEVER that easy. So, Texas, is that anywhere near San Antonio.

Don't get high hopes, wine runs in 5% of the times. Also don't forget to get the setup package and setup wine first, this will improve your chances .

greetz,
