The old mail program

Hello all. I no longer can use mail as in mail abc@abc.net. mail root < file dosen't work either. Where can I check to see if the service is running and what is it called. I have sendmail running already. mail always worked so I am confused why it stopped.

try this:

mail -s subject root abc@abc.net < file

well, this sends an email with body from "file" with subject "subject" coming from the logged in user to root and abc@abc.net. assuming that ur system knows abc.net.

monitor /var/log/maillog if u still have problems with it.
btw, u can send mail without the sendmail daemon running.

Thanks

I looked at the /var/log/mail file and it said something about tcpwrappers and I remembered that I put ALL:ALL in my hosts.deny file. I read somewhere that doing that was a good idea for security reasons.
I wasn't aware of the log file.
Thanks again.
