The infamous open command

Once upon a time, I was able to issue

Code:
open kwrite
from a terminal window and I would not have to close kwrite to continue using the terminal. I can't do that under Suse Enterprise. Anyone know where the source code is for it? It's really hard to find (try to google "linux open command").

I've never seen the open command, but you should just be able to background the process with an ampersand to continue using the terminal it was launched from:
Code:
kwrite &
Where did you use this open command? Which distro was it? It sounds like a distro-specific tool to me.

I've never seen an "open" command line tool either.

However the ampersand at the end should work.

I think I used it in Fedora and Debian. Those were my favorite distros back when I used Linux as my primary OS.

Looks like it was part of GNUstep, called open.app. Still exists in Debian.
