well d00d without even answering your question i am going to give you a link that i think you will find most helpful

Table Of Equivalents

this page pretty well covers lists the program type and what its called in window and its equivalent in linux....and gives you a link to go to the webpage...what i found "for the most part" is that if it doesn't come with a link, that most likely it is already installed on your box, or the distros cd's contain it.

have fun! ;-0

Well that depends on the distro. With regards to RedHat...

For my money (actually all the stuff I use is free but...)
1. apt4rpm -
2. galeon
3. sylpheed-claws
4. sndconfig (w/o it the legacy HW I use wouldn't be playing the ani cd I am listening to right now)
5. ViM
6. bash
7. wget
8. rpm
9. gcc
10 . perl for further info. Welcome to linux!

apt-get for making my life easier and winex3 to make me forget Winslow :)

Dude, just kind of curious why you're including a link to a WinXP tutorial-and-tips site in your sig block if you're using terms such as "winblows" in your posts. Seems a little contradictory, unless it's some sort of inside joke or something. Maybe I'm clueless but I don't get it. -- J.W.

Well, it's my site... I started it because I got bored with Windows... I learned way too much about it and there was nothing for me to do anymore... besides reboot when it crashed. So I decided to start that site to make a little extra money. It was originally started as a coding site... with tutorials on how to write things like html, css, javascript, c++ (with a little windows info on the side), but writing lessons took forever, so I started writing tips and tricks for windows. I think everyone, including those 80 year-olds using windows, deserve a little help every now and then.

I would take it off my sig to make you happy, but the more traffic I generate, the more money future sponsors will pay.

One more thing, your quote is out of context. Shold be more like this:

"winblows community"

In other words, I was saying that the windows community sucks and they are not as friendly when it comes to helping other users out. Or so it seems from the way my messageboard has turned out so far.

Ain't it sexy...

Westdog, no hassles bro, I was just curious about the (apparent) contradiction between the post and site in the sig block. No need to change anything, and I'm sorry if my comment came across as being anything other than an straightforward question, as that was not my intention. Good luck with your site.

Otherwise though, heck Yes, the Linux community will go out of its way to assist anyone who expresses an interest in learning more, especially on this board. Personally, I consider LQ to be an unbelievably useful and helpful resource, and I don't know what I'd do without it. I'm a novice in the Linux world, but I have learned a huge amount just from reading the comments of the other posters here. As long as you're willing to do some learning and digging and experimentation, the other guys/women here on the board are more than willing to point you in the right direction. Regards -- J.W.
