the command rpm shows the message "segmentation fault" in my red hat linux 8.0 server

I have a red hat linux 8.0 server and I want to upgrade mysql 3.23.58 to 4.0, but my rpm command shows this error "segmentation fault" at the end of the rpm -Uvh mysql-server-version command, is there another way to upgrade it?, thanks in advance....:)

Not so fast.

Probably not what you want to hear but since running GNU/Linux is all about performance, protecting assets and providing services in a continuous, stable and secure way I must emphasise that Red Hat Linux maintenance and errata support ended on April 30 of 2004 for all YES ALL Red Hat Linux releases (RHL, not RHEL). The version you run is obsolete, no longer maintained, unsupported. This means you miss out on all the new technology that's been around for ages, all the bug fixes and all the security updates. So unless you're a seasoned admin and need to worry about legacy applications or unless you have the knowledge and time to maintain this setup to keep it from (doing) harm, keeping your machine attached to the Internet makes it a hazard not only for you but for the whole community. Please confine the machine, plan your migration and be quick about it.

If you like the effort Red Hat puts into certification, ISV acceptance, support longevity and stability of RHEL but don't want to pay for RHEL then you could run CentOS (current is 5.3). If you like what RHL provided then you could run Fedora (unstable is 12 right now). Else check out the many "choose a distro" threads or the megathread at LQ.

If a basic command the system relies on for package management then you should choose to fix that before doing anything else, not try to find workarounds. That said saying "my rpm command shows this error" doesn't us help help you: instead post the command used and the full output. Also, does 'rpm' segfault with any command you supply (information, listing, verifying)? And I would also like to request you verify installed RPM packages and investigate anything out of the ordinary in the results.
