The Anti-X Distro... a.k.a. "Debian"

Every single time I install Debian, no matter how careful I am or what options I specify, once I get it installed it WILL NOT startx. It gives me some funky error. When I installed Libranet (a Debian based distro), it all worked fine. Libranet have a VERY nice installer, but everthing else about it sucks in my opinion.

Can anyone tell me how to fix my X problem? I know I installed KDE and Gnome, so it's all there.

Otherwise, here is what I hate about Libranet so much. Maybe one of you know a Debian based distro that won't annoy me so much but will be easy to install.

1. It loads tons of software into menus named "Debian." I can't stand that!! At LEAST Red Hat called the folder "More Software." I know I can fix it if I want to (at least under KDE), but I just don't think I should have to.

2. Libranet's custom configuration tools aren't all that impressive and some features don't work at all.

3. There was some other little things, but I got rid of it too quick to remember them all.

I dont know the point of installing it more than once to get it to startx. Its going to be the same everytime until you configure your X properly. edit /etc/X11/XF86Config or the like, then startx.

This relatively easy to fix. When you get "some funky error", you must run some "unfunky commands" as root. The problem is that there is too much funk in your system and it must be removed.

Or you could provide us with a bettor error message to help you troubleshoot the problem.

I know that my posting isn't really too useful, but that's the funniest post I've ever read on this site, Stickman. Even my wife, (a Windows user) thought that was funny.

Anyway, now for some somewhat helpfulish info. When I installed Debian, it did have those Debian menus. And I installed it straight from Woody. In fact, they still have those menus. But then again, I don't use those programs so much anyway. And if I did use one of those programs much then I would move them. At least it' s not Redhat. When I first used Redhat, it was totally Redhatified. Now I couldn't stand that. I can at least deal with Debian Menus.

As for installation hints, I hear that Knoppix makes it real easy. If that doesn't cook your chicken, then try a friendly Distribution such as Mandrake or Lindows.

Yeah, Debian is tough, but it is well worth it.

*lol*

'unfunk -R /'

Get defunkified.

Try 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' and see what happens. I can't give details because I was winging it and forgot the nightmare immediately after, but that's what I did to get Debian's X up.

I run Debian very sucessfully. Once I installed the base system and the nvidia drivers I just did.

"apt-get install x-window-system"

Then follow the guide here at:

http://www.kde.org/documentation/use...ng-debian.html

Thats what I did and had no problems.
