Simple question ... how do you extract a .tgz file ...

Usually its used as an abreviation for a tar,gz

tar -xvzf thefile.tgz

if you run kde, just right-click the file and select "ectract here"

.tgz is also the extension of Slackware packages, which are not necessarily meant to be extracted.
