Question Text2speech / narrating software

Greetings!

Does anyone know of any linux application that can read out a given text via the sound device? Such software must have been around for at least six years, as I remember having such a program on my SB16's driver disks back then, so I imagine someone must have done such a thing for linux (by the way, today's programs still sound like the old one )?

I did some search with google and sourceforge but I didn't find anything useful. =(

Thanks in advance for any hints!

If it wouldn't be to much trouble then please keep us informed on your efforts - We are planning to look at festival in connection with our project for the disabled going open source and I'd love to hear first hand experiences with the software

thank you, XavierP, for the link. This is exactly what I was looking for.

but after reading the manual I couldnt spot any information about how to make it output the sound as a binary...meaning instead of output it as sound to the sound card or write into a file, is there a way to make it output it as binary data (or text if its easier to understand), so it could be "captured" in the software it was called from (particulary I need it for php code).

Writing to a file is one way, but I'd like to avoid it if possible...
Did I miss something from the manual? (server mode wont work in my case)

Thank you!
