teTex, pdfeTex and Debian woes... help!

I was just recently resurrecting my Linux environment after a 3 year Linux haitus. Our IT guys gave me a debian laptop (latest distro) and I installed the teTex packages just the other day. My primary problem is that teTex uses pdfetex as the primary latex compiler, and I want it to use latex. I tried using all the -progname options, but with no luck. Specifically, the problem is that my LaTex build environment assumes the use of EPS file (yes, I know I can convert them to pdf).

The main problem was the 'unknown graphics extension: .eps' which is obviously due to the pdfetex program (e.g., I know pdfetex does not process eps files). Help?? Also, I swear this was not an issue under RedHat 8.0 (yes, it has been a while).
