Terminal opens to ~/Desktop

It seems that in the default install of Mandriva 2006, the GNOME terminal always opens to ~/Desktop. This is quite annoying, as I keep typing forgetting that I am not in ~/ and keep typing in incorrect routes to the folders. I don't know where to fix this problem. Any ideas?
