Terminal emulators don't work in X
OK. I'm running a mix of Debian testing/unstable/experimental and a couple days something strange broke. I dont remember what exact packages I upgraded but it wasn't anything major. (I think it may have just been a new Xfree86 package but I'm not sure.)
Well now I can no longer open a terminal in X. Konsole and the gnome terminal emulator will just show a cursor but no prompt and I can't type anything, eterm will open then close immediately and xterm wont even start. Also, when I try to execute something that requires root permissions, kdesu will ask for my password then pop up an error saying "The program 'su' is not found! Make sure your PATH is set correctly". Of course the PATH is set correctly and the suid bit is set on the su executable and I can run it fine outside of X.
Anyone else experienced this? I'm going nuts here and haven't found anything on google.
Thank you,
Leo
