Terminal Autoscroll Annoyance

Is there a way I can prevent the terminal from automatically scrolling to the bottom when I'm compiling? I'm using rxvt and it's really annoying when I'm trying to read the compiler output history and it keeps returning to the most recent output :(

My scroll-lock key doesn't seem to work in Linux

Actually that doesn't seem to work in rxvt for some reason - it does respond to serial commands though:
Stop: Ctrl+s
Start: Ctrl+q
