Telnet break command (RedHat)

I am telneting to various Cisco switches routers from my Linux workstation. Occasionally I will be in a situation (eg. Traceroute) where I need to send a break. On Windows I can do this with ctrl-shift 6. If I try the telnet break ']' it drops me to the telnet command line. exiting the command line returns me to my stuck session.

I am forced to close the window to disconnect which leaves a hung connection which I have to manually disconnect (or wait for it to time-out) after reconnecting.

Is there a better telnet program I should be using? Is there a break sequence / command that I'm missing? (tried standard things like ctrl-c / ctrl-z / etc.

Thanks.

netcat pipes the raw stdin through a socket; that might be useful to you.
