TD Ameritrade Thinkorswim crashing X server

A few months ago, Thinkorswim started crashing my Xserver. When I start Thinkorswim, it runs a persistent progress bar as it attempts to download updates. After about 10 seconds, it crashes my Xserver and I'm booted out of GUI.

I've tried reinstalling Thinkorswim and changing the version of Java that it uses. No avail. I contacted TD Ameritrade and they said they have not received any reports similar to mine (originally I suspected one of the updates they push when the program loads was causing the issue).

What I'm hoping to learn is what kind of Linux tools could I use to troubleshoot this issue? Where would you start on this kind of crash?

Distro: Slackware 14.1 x86
JDK: 7u71 (recommended by TD Ameritrade)
Thinkorswim: latest version from https://mediaserver.thinkorswim.com/...r/install.html

Check the log files in /var/log, in particular /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.?.log, and /var/log/syslog.

Try starting the application from the command line. When it crashes, it may leave some useful error messages.

Good luck.
