My webserver is running Fedora core1. For a week now my hard disk light has been going crazy with activity, yet my router is not show excessive traffic. Is there a program fro Fedora Core1 like TCPVIEW for windows that allow a you to see TCP activit end to en per protocol so that you could trouble shoot this kind of a problem? TCPView is a windows app.. Can someone please advise me if you have the answer
There's an app called ethereal which can monitor network traffic (it's really easy to use too).
You can also use a command line tool called tcpdump, which grabs all the network traffic from an interface and dumps it to a text file. (The tcpdump text files can even be opened by ethereal for analysis if you like).
I'd check 'top' while your hard drive is thrashing to see what programs are most active too.
Thank you very much for your reply. I will try these immediately.. Also is there a tool out there that can measure bandwidth form router to router VPN tunnel or Point to point to tell what acutal bandwidth of the connection is? I am using Cisco routers exclusively.
Netactview ( netactview.sourceforge.net ) is more like TcpView than ethereal. It is a graphical application with process information, host name retrieval, automatic refresh and sorting, color highlight and filtering.
