Tcl/Tk messing with Engage

I've setup a computer for a friend running GNOME 2.10 and the e17 libs to run engage for some nice eye-candy. It all works great, looks shit hot too, but whenever he tries to start aMSN engage dies. I tried running it from a terminal to see the output and it's just seg faulting. The system is running Tk 8.5, Tcl 8.5 and aMSN 0.94. I tried to get him to use Gaim but that didn't work so has anyone got any suggestions at all I could try? The only way to make engage start again is to restart X...

Thanks
