Tar Problems

Okay lets start. I can't untar tar files anymore. I used the Archive Manager to untar a .tar file NOT A .tar.gz When I do that i always get an error message that says something like:
"mv: will not overwrite just-created `/home/my user name of course/downloads/themes/edgeicons/gtk-apply.svg' with `/tmp/file-roller.4827.0/Edge-Icons-0.4.2/scalable/gtk/gtk-apply.svg' "

So I figured I'd have to be root so i went into the terminal and su then " tar x filename.tar /path to save it/ " well now it just sits there and sits there and sits there. So I exit theterminal. Open a new one and tar -xvf filename.tar /path to file name/ and i get error message saying that file doesn't exist when i have it typed correctly Capitals and all.

Any suggestion on why this wants to give me hell?

It's probably waiting on standard input.

Use this command instead:
tar -xvvf foobar.tar
where foobar.tar is the name of your tar file.

If you want to untar into another directory other then the one you are working in then try a "tar -xvf file.tar -C /directory-path/".
