/home probably isn't writeable by a normal user. Actually, it really shouldn't be. Try saving to /home/yourusername/filename. Each user account you create has its own directory in /home. /home/username. Ordinarily, that user can only write there. Part of linux's security strategy.

If you're downloading a file with a ,v extension you're probably downloading it wrong. ,v extensions are given to files in a CVS repository, so try checking out the files using CVS instead.
