tar: Child died with signal 11

I tried to install the latest version of firefox (1.5.0.2), and when I tried to extract the tar-ball using tar -xzvf firefox-1.5.0.2.tar.gz, I got the rather cryptic error message "tar: Child died with signal 11". Didn't find anything on it on the man pages and some quick searching found nothing.
Any clues as to how to proceed would be appreciated!

You could "gunzip" it first separately to see what the error is. Could mean bad download.
