talkd console chat - username length limitation ?

I have a strange problem with talkd.
In principle it works fine on one machine or between different machines. The problem is that if user A wants to connect to user B and B happens to have a username with more than 8 or 10 letters it just won't work !

example:

user A: talk BBBBBBBBBB@host1

[your party is not logged on]

but the very same command works, if B had initiated the chat and user A is just answering the chat request with above command !

???
