Taking a segment of a movie?

I have a DVD, and I want to rip a small segment (about 5-6 minutes worth) and email it to a friend so I can show him the part I'm talking about. I've ripped the movie to my hard drive, but I don't know how to only take the segment I want. Is there any way to do this? I have only mplayer currently, and I can boot to Windows if necessary, though I'd rather not.

did you use mencoder?
If so just add -ss hh:mm:ss -endpos hh:mm:ss to your command line (ex. -ss 00:20:00 -endpos 00:25:00)
-ss for start postition and -endpos for end position
