tabbed terminals, ATI binary drivers, ncurses: a losing combination

I just replaced my aging nVidia AGP card with an Asus AH3650, based on the Radeon HD 3650. I got the latest ATI binary drivers installed, and now I've got a weird problem:

In mrxvt, applications that use line-drawing text characters (ncurses) don't display properly. They worked fine with the old card, and they work fine now in other terminals (konsole, xterm, rxvt...). Mrxvt is my by far favourite terminal emulator, though. Searching google gives a few similar reports but no solutions.

Right now I'm just using konsole but it seems sloooooow in comparison. I haven't found any other good tabbed terminal emulators to try out but if someone could even recommend another one (non-Gnome) it would be a good quickfix.

Running Slackware 12.1 in case that matters. Video card seems to be working fine otherwise.
