System sound works OK, but RealPlayer sound not there?

I am using RH 9 Mozilla with RealPlayer plugin. I can see video OK, but there is no sound.

Sound works OK when I use the KDE Control Center to test it.

IWhat is causing this?

Realplayer might be too old

I can't get RealPlayer 8 working with my computer either. Maybe the Linux version of Realplayer is too old to be compatible with RedHat 9. They haven't re-written it in a long time.

Even the new Realplayer 10 beta (released last night some time) uses OSS. You are hearing the KDE sounds through aRTs and your system is likely using ALSA. To use an older OSS-based "sound player", you need the oss compatibility module enabled.

OK........I've heard those terms somewhere before (Arts, OSS, ALSA) but I have no idea what they are, nor do I know how to get and install them. Help on that would be appreciated.

vectordrake 06-16-2004 06:53 PM

ALSA You're probably running it already. Do a lsmod and see if your sound card drivers start with "snd_xxx"

arts Used by KDE to make sounds (such as the desktop sounds)

OSS Most of the latest systems use ALSA instead.

glenn69 06-16-2004 08:59 PM

I did the lsmod and I don't see anything beginning with snd_xxx.

you have alsa

realplayer needs oss. you need to modprobe the oss compatibility module, I think.

Or, do yourself a bigger favor and dump realplayer. Install mplayer with the win32 codecs and real codecs. Then you have the best media player going.

glenn69 06-16-2004 11:08 PM

I have mplayer, however I don't think it is set up correctly...is there a conf file that I can post to see what my prob is?

vectordrake 06-17-2004 08:17 AM

I don't know where it is. It installed properly on my machine when I had Mandrake. I'm gonna compile it on Gentoo here when I get around to it. If you don't figure it out before I do, I'll post my results.. I know that the folks at the mplayer site have pretty good instructions about it. You may have installed/compiled it without adding the codec support, perhaps.
