System slows down when large area is selected

I just installed KDE 3.5 on Suse 10.0. The problem is when I try to select large groups of icons on the desktop or in konqueror the whole system slows down while I'm moving the mouse. CPU usage jumps to 100%. I've seen absolutely the same thing in different version of kde and different distros. I suspect it's all caused from the way selections are drawn on the monitor (with transparency). If someone knows how to fix that pls reply.
I have AMD semptron processor 3100+, 512 MB RAM, nvidia GeForce FX 5500 with nvidia drivers installed

I am assuming you have the appropriate Nvidia Linux drivers installed, and that you have correctly configured Xwindows to use them?

This kind of laggy bitmap behaviour seems to me to be symptomatic of running the Xserver in VESA compatibility mode (which will work, but you'll have no OpenGL or bitmap acceleration support) on the Nvidia based card you have.

I would advise (if you have not done so already) to install the latest Nvidia Linux drivers, and make sure they are correctly configured and used. Post again if you need pointers on how to do this.

I found a solution for the problem. I simply had to add the followig in the device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf :
Option "RenderAccel" "1"
