system seems to be showing a laudable amount of common sense :-)

Really we need a little more information to help you.

How far does the installation get?

Are you installing from DVD or CD? Are they burnt ISOs or retail disks?

Is it a homebuild P4 or a Dell or what?

How does the computer shutdown? Gracefully with errors or just power off? Is it actaully shutting down or is it just that the screen goes black? Does it reboot afterwards?

the system does not shutdown gracefully i.e. it just shuts off as though someone removed the power cable.

after that when i try to start it using the power button it does not for a few minutes.

the instalation reaches about halfway when installing the packages

it is an assembled PC.installed from a CD.its not a retail version.

sounds like it is an issue involving an over heating PSU....the delay in being able to power it back on being the time for the thermal cut out to cool down.

Never come across it as a symptom of installing any Operating System.

Did you set the BIOS up to auto shutdown at a given temperature?
