system hangs when attempting to play avi or mov files
Fedora 1, fully updated with apt-get, kde desktop, athlon 1.8Ghz processor, nVidia Riva TNT video card:
I was able to doubleclick on avi files and play it from gnome desktop prior to recent update. mov files did not play then, but did not hang the system. Now, the system hangs and the only way to restart it is to pull the plug. I have both RealPlayer9 and mplayer installed; behavior is the same. Thanks for any help, Jankom (still a beginner in Linux) |
have u install the agp card driver
i have almost same problem playing video before install the agp driver download it from www.nvidia.com then install and read the read me carefully u have to edit the file /etc/X11/xf86.config u will find friver 'nv' made it 'nvidia' and etc work u will find all in readme file if u r driver alrady installed have a look on u r xf86config.check it |
nvidia AGP driver
Thanks for the quick reply. No, I have not installed the GART patch for AGP mode yet, because it involves patching the kernel and I don't feel confident yet. My kernel is 2.4.22-1.2188. Will play with it during the next few days and will post if I succeeded and how.

Now, instead of pulling the plug try Ctrl+Alt+Bkspace instead to reset your wdm. I think the wdm is likely hanging, but not the system itself.

To salahuddin_66: changing nv to nvidia in /etc/X11/xf86Config prevented the X-server from starting, so I changed it back to nv. I'll have to work on the nvidia driver installation. I thought everything was installed except for the AGP patch because my network card works. It is part of the nforce driver package (network card, video driver and AGP patch).
To Dave Worth: Ctrl+Alt+Bs does not work, not even Ctrl+Alt+Del. Only pulling the plug. So probably it is not the wdm. Must be the video driver. Thanks to both of you, jankom:cry: |
Hmmm, strange. I'm assuming that you followed the instructions in README per salahuddin_66's suggestion. Did you notice that at the bottom of the README is a FAQ with a question specifically about what to do if XServer fails to start after the config is set? take a look at the README file posted here as a link to Nvidia's website under section 4. Nvidia definitely does recommend "nv" for that card, per section 3. Did you set the module sections as suggested in README?

nope
i am using slackware 9.1 i just made nv to nvidia |
Did you do a modprobe nvidia afterwards?
|
no

Thank you all for the comments and ideas. This afternoon (Sunday and rain) I was able to make it work.
I started the mplayer, selected the avi file from there and the system did not hang but provided an error message that the X-driver was missing. So I followed recommendations in the error message (VERY HELPFUL), and was able to select x11 as the driver in the Preferences, Video section. I still do not have agp enabled, because I did not apply the kernel patch yet, but at least both avi and mov files play now. More fine tuning is needed and agp should help, but I'm a major step ahead. I'll study the nvidia Readme link. My grapfics card is a Riva TNT2 (not very sexy). Thanks again, jankom:study: |
God on ya, Jankom, glad you got it working! ;)
