System Crashes

Using slackware 12.2, icewm, AMD 900mhz, 30gb fireball, Compaq Presario. My system freezes all the time. I checked /var/log/syslog and found this:
1) TSC unable to calibrate against PIT
2) VIA 686a 0000:00:14.4 base add not set upgrade Bios or use "force_addr=0xaddr".. How do i do this or how do i find a linux based bios?

3)VT596_smbus 0000:14.4: SMBUS: Error: Host SMBUS controller not enabled

Please help me fix these configuration issues. I really need to get this box working right. hardware. I have googled this issue and found similar post but no instruction for solutions. I would need instructions for bios update.

4) Can someone tell me what
"'st' needs updating - please use bus_type methods"
" 'sd'needs updating - please use bus_type methods"
" 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods"
to update means?

What model Presario? Give us that information.
Second, and you may not like this: Have you tried any other distros on the said computer?

These are warning messages from the kernel developers.
They are messages to themselves, really, and can be safely ignored if you are not a kernel developer.

The kernel is constantly changing, "legacy behaviour" is tolerated to a certain degree, but the warning messages suggest that something needs to be updated to deal with the new (and doubtless improved), kernel behaviour. Kernel support for whatever it is that needs updating (in this example: to use "bus_type methods" instead of what was the previously accepted behaviour, may be dropped soon. So the developers need to move on now and update their methods, or get left behind, with broken programs.

There is no such thing as a "linux BIOS". The BIOS is decided by your MoBo's manufacturer. That's it.

If slackware is giving you grief (it has a good reputation, but it's not, perhaps, for "newbies") then try another distro. Here

Mr Bisquit, Have you any suggestions for alternate linux distros that might be more compatible. I have looked for Bios update with no success. I understand this compaq box may be junk.
Maybe I can just install webmin and slackware servers, you think this would help?

I don't remember which boot loader slax uses, but try passing 'noapic' to the kernel on boot-up. With grub, when the boot menu appears you hit e, then select the kernel line, use the arrows to navigate to the kernel line, and hit e again. This gives you the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst, and you append 'noapic' at the end of that line, and hit b. That should work.

Thanks so much for working with me and helping. I edited /etc/lilo.conf by adding append ="noapic" to the end of file and the ran invoked lilo by using /sbin/lilo as root to activate the edited change.
Please tell me if having a previous setting to get this box to shutdown 'append="append=acpi=force"' conflicts with the new append line of "noapic"?

**Here are results for lspci -v are there configurations i can use to customize to make slackware a better fit for this hardware?

I would try acpi=off and noapic. On older mobos the acpi is buggy, and the apics are not timed right for the kernel. I think if you boot with acpi=off and no apic, it should work right. I am not sure if acpi=force would conflict with noapic, because it really depends on the exact hardware.

Thank you again... the 'noapic' line does not conflict with previously set 'append="append=acpi=force' line to get force system to shutdown so i did not remove it.
Appending 'noapic' line has solved my system crash problem since I lasted posted.
