System blanks text field
Using the URL bar to type in a query. As I type a few characters the field blanks. Happens on both Chrome and Firefox. I have tried a different keyboard and the problem persists. Where could I look for the resolution?

Does your Ubuntu have any other WM or DE you could try instead of Mate? If yes, you should be able to select one from your login screen. If yes, try logging into an alternate instead of Mate, to test if the problem occurs outside of Mate, and thus whether it is a fault of Mate or not.

Try starting the browser from the command line and typing in the search question.
It's a long shot, but the browser might throw a helpful error message to the command line.
