Syslinux copyright screen is all that apears when booting Ubuntu from a USB stick

I'm trying to boot to Ubuntu from a USB stick, and it works just fine on my desktop computer, I'm able to boot without error. when I try to do it on my laptop, however, all that I get is a banner of white text at the top of a black screen with the syslinux copyright information. the same thing happened when I tried booting puppy Linux. The laptop is a Lenovo, running Windows 7 currently

Does anyone know why this might happen only on certain hardware, and how to fix this?

Not all computers like syslinux. Some versions of syslinux may be buggy or need some setting, I forget maybe an int 15 issue??? Some syslinux config. Some issue with how the computer see's or you select boot device. It should be a hard drive order not a usb drive order choice.

Do a normal install with grub and it will/should boot to all supported hardware.
