Syncronize cell phone, desktop, and POP: recommendations?
 

Old: Yahoo webmail, address book, and calendar synced with Palm Pilot via Yahoo Intellisync on Windows.

New: Motorola A1200 linux phone + desktop running Kubuntu Feisty. Currently syncronizing using Intellisync in a Windows virtual machine.

The question: I'd like to get rid of Windows and Yahoo webmail completely (the new version has way too many ads, and they're gross ads to boot).

My phone has syncml, so I'm thinking I should find a good email/PIM for Linux, connect to Yahoo POP (yes I have access), and then sync the Linux client with my phone via syncml. I know programs exist, but I don't have a lot of time to experiment so I'd like to just go with the best.

So what I need:

- Email client / PIM for desktop
- Syncml plugin / program for desktop

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

This is not my area, so I'm just guessing, but as an Novell Evolution user who just got it sync with ScheduleWorld, but not a phone, I think Evolution might be a good place to start, as far as I know, it does well with syncing with phones using syncml.

I'm going to try Kontact, because it's the KDE version of Evolution: http://kontact.org/

I can't figure out how synchronize my phone with my computer. My phone supports syncml, which is fine, and there are several projects for linux that support syncml: ksyncml, multisync, kitchensync, and of course opensync (the backend).

The problem: none of them have a decent howto, tutorial, or basic manual. I've tried poking around on my own but it's not obvious how to make this stuff work. I've searched for instructions, but all I've found are old, dead links.

Is anybody doing this? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

I'm sort of in the same place. I'm using Kontact and have it setup nice but can't get it to sync with my smartphone. unfortunatly we don't get any Linux phones that can be used as phones in the US so I'm stuck with windows mobile 6. I can't get synce working so I can't synch with my phone.
To get started I exported all my contacts and copied them to my work PC and used the copy of outlook that is on my office PC to get them there. I started playing with oggsync and got my phone to sync with a google calendar which I can import from kontact but trying to get opensync working I get duplicate entries in the google calendar coming from kontact.
Then I plugged my phone in my work pc today and it decided it was a new device and deleted everything I had on it, one of the fun issues of using MS software.
