synaptic package manager-where are my files?

i have ubuntu 6.10, i download wine, and other programs like various games, office oriented programs and gnome-based desktop applications that display weather on the desktop-and i cant find any of them. no window i open has them, and i guess i'm assuming that logic would state that the programs, being graphical, would be graphically installed, not through command line. i need help, i'm fed up with this, i need to get very specific programs for my boss by saturday and these damn programs dont show.

They should appear in the programs menu (you may have to restart Gnome for them to show, I don't know). If not, then they can be started by typing their names into the terminal (if you are unsure of the name, then type part of it, press tab to auto-complete the rest of it, or press tab twice if there is more then one program starting with the given letters).
If they start fine from the terminal then they can be added to the programs menu with a menu editor.

dpkg -l
lists all packages installed
dpkg -L <package-name>
lists all files and their locations that are part of the package

thanks! i'll try that, in the mean time, i found the programs i needed through the add/remove programs thing. (i thought it was like windows where the add/remove programs required installation CDs to add anything.
