synaptic hanging on low resourced machine

I am running redhat 9 on a pentium 200 with 128 Mbytes RAM. Yes it is slow but it is used mostly as a gateway to the internet which it performs fine. The problem i have is with Synaptic hanging and cannot be killed. Synaptic works fine for a while but after a few updates and/or deletes it just stops responding and i cannot kill it. A reboot is the only way to get rid of it. I notice the last time it hung that it was using some 200 meg of resources. My guess is that it used it's memory allocation and then froze when no more resources were made available. Everything else works fine while synaptic is frozen but the resources are then very limited. Is there a work around to stop synaptic freezing an or a way to kill it when it does. I have gone to the command line and logged in as root ansd issued kill commands but it just won't die......

256 meg. Linux seems to allow apps to swallow swap space with out giving it back when the app is closed. Can i allocate more swap space on the fly?? I know have 128 meg of RAM which has helpped a little.
