synaptic error in Suse 9.1

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

This is the error message I get when I try to start synaptic. I installed apt fine and tried to install synaptic by apt-get install synaptic and it dl'd some packages and wouldn't work so I dl'd the rpm and installed it through Yast.

Apt seems to work fine, it updates without a problem but I need synaptic, I don't know all of the 800 character linux names of software, I also like the descriptions.

This means that, as root, you cannot use the normal users screen. This would fix:
as normal user do:
xhost + localhost

as root do:
export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

You can su and run root commands in the console, when logged as normal user. But if you try to run a root GUI, you receive that warning.
