Synaptic & Mandrake 10.1: "Could not download all repository indexes"

I'm trying to get Synaptic working on my Mandrake 10.1 system again for the umpteenth time, after yet another dependency hell with RPMDrake. (Gnome-Panel requires libhowl, which requires howl, which requires libhowl! )

I'm trying to refresh/reload my list of programs. However, for every repository I try, I get the message:
Code:
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network
problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository
will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address
in the preferences.
I don't think I'm using a proxy, and I've tried about a dozen different repositories (which I got from EasyURPMI). None have worked!

What am I doing wrong? Please help!

APT and Synaptic are not well supported on Mandirva and their apt and synaptic release notes state this. You should use urpmi/rpmdrake.

Well, as I noted, rpmdrake is putting me in dependency hell. I need a way out.
