Sylpheed v3.5.0, delete old messages

Since Sylpheed lacks option 'delete old messages', can I simply use find+rm to delete them?
like so:
find /home/user/Mail/DATA/* -type f -mtime +20 -exec rm -v {} \;

I'm unfamiliar with Sylpheed, but I would be concerned that the internal workings of the program might become confused if mail that it thinks is stored for you were to be deleted by other means, as you suggest. You could probably create some test cases to see how it reacts when you run it again after one or more emails were deleted.

But reading a bit about Sylpheed indicates it has very powerful filtering abilities. Would it not be better to create a filter that would sort by date, and use that sorting as a delete criteria from within Sylpheed itself?
