Im running MEPIS 04 debian based, and I want to switch to gnome, i currently have KDE, what do I need to install from Kpackage to get gnome going theres many choices, then how do I start it, do I have to delete KDE.
I shoulda started with this. I may not need to switch but after updating KDE today it freeze ALOT and I have to restart, alsoi cant log in as root. I cant even type root and my passwd to log on. Can anyone point me in the right direction with this stuff?
Not being able to login as root, can be caused by the variable AllowRoot in gdm.conf. It's possible that after the upgrade the value of the variable changed from true to false.
Although it's discouraged to use root in the GUI, it makes life a lot easier if you're not familiar with command line tools to format floppies, add users etc. For me that makes it acceptable to login as root.
Just don't be root for a longer time than necessary.
I know that in RH8, all graphical sysadmin tools show in the user menu. When activated, your prompted for the root password.
That's obviously the better solution, but I don't know if it applies to other distros.
Ubuntu uses sudo; sysadmin tools also show in the user menu. Activating the function will prompt the user for his/her password again.
It's hard to work out why something freezes without looking at log files.
However, MEPIS tracks the Debian Unstable repositories (from memory) - there's a change that there was a bug in a package you downloaded and running 'apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade' will fix the problem.
Getting into gnome will be easy - it will be added to the 'session' menu in the log in screen (kdm). It may not be called 'session' in kdm, but it will be something like that. Select 'Gnome' and you're on your way.
Since KDE has become unstable, it's probably best to work from the command prompt for a little while.
After you boot and you get to the login screen Press 'Ctl-Alt-F2' to get to a console. Log in as root and run 'apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade'. (From memory Ctl-Alt-F6 will get you back to the KDM login screen. Running 'reboot' will reboot and 'halt' will turn your computer off.)
If KDE is stable enough to do a few things, there's a button called 'upgrade' in synaptic and probably a similar button/menu item in kPackage.
