Switching from SimplyMepis to Ubuntu
 

Hello there. I would like to switch from Mepis to Ubuntu but I don't know how. I have a dual boot disk with windows xp and Mepis, I used three partitions for mepis: root, home and swap. If I have the ubuntu cd, what now? Thanks

find out which partitions are which, and boot into the live Ubuntu CD. On the desktop there is an 'install' icon; click it and go through the setup. You'll want to manually partition the drive and go from there; set your old / as the new / and yes partition it; set the old /swap as the new /swap and yes partition it; set the old /home as the new /home and NO DON'T PARTITION IT; this way you'll keep all of your current files.

Ubuntu is based on Gnome, meaning that the config files in your /home (which are generally KDE on Mepis) will be kinda useless; regardless they may help to configure your KDE apps. If at all possible, however, I would try to remove those that exist so that any new KDE apps will have fresh config files. In my experience, moving distros (even with the same KDE version) has caused some headaches for the config, and I end up deleting pretty much all hidden files and folders in my /home

Note also that setting up in Ubuntu, you need to have the same username as in Mepis or it will create a whole new /home/newuser In some cases this might be OK, however, since then you can copy your files out of /home/mepisuser without the config files transferring, and then can delete the /home/mepisuser directory (if you want).

Hi lefty.crupps, thanks a lot for the advise. But I'm a newbie so please guide me trough: 1. I login with the live CD (that is, I boot with it), then in the desktop I use "set up" (sorry, I still don't have the CD, I'm downloading it :) ). As I don't still have the CD, I wonder if what you mean as "partition" is "formatting", please correct me if I'm wrong.
Then I repartition (format) the root and swap and leave the home as it is (by the way, I don't have any important files in it so, if it is easier and better, I would erase or clear everything fresh). How do I set the old / to the new / ? By this you mean the /root? Should I repartition (format) the /home too if I don' need the files therein?
By the username you mean that when it asks me or a name I use the same one I used in mepis?
So, I insert, set up, repartition (format) / (/root?), /swap and no-/home (yes-/home in case I don't need it?) with new (with the procedure you're going to tell me :) ) and follow instructions and that's all? If that's true then I'll start as soon as I have the cd.
Please correct me, add or modify as you please, you're the experts. Kindest regards
