how do i get swat on my system? i did a server install. although i did not install all packages, i installed the important ones. my version is redhat 8.0.

i went to edit the file /etc/xinetd.d/swat to enable swat but there was no file. i do have smb starting in the services. and i do have the smb.conf file. what the hell am i missing.

Have you tried locating it? Try looking in /etc/samba for the file, sometimes that is a default location for samba files.

Yes, i have tried locating it. it is not in the /etc/samba directory.
when i do a 'whereis swat' i get "swat:"

This is easy and requires no command line commands to turn the swat on.


Now remember one thing the swat program doesn't go with the redhat 8.0 you have yours comes with the samba client and samba server which doesn't include samba-swat your going to have to unistall your package.

Know select new samba security patch the latest

you should come to list select redhat 8.0

Samba server 2.2.7
Samba-client 2.2.7
Samba-common(they state it includes everything) 2.2.7
Samba-swat 2.2.7

The reason your deleting the original samba is that the up date version for some reason doesn't not run with the one you have redhat 8.0 comes with I believe 2.2.5 the version you looking for is 2.2.7
download all four and install it.

After downloading and installing you may have to restart your computer for this to take effect.

For some reason mine would not show up until I restarted the computer.(This is the only program I've had to restart the computer in order for it to show up).



1.go to the redhat > server settings > go down till you come to the swat program make sure you check the box if so you should be good to go.

2. Open your browser and type in http://localhost:901/ you will know see a box asking for name and password it should be root and your root password by default.


3. from know on you should be able to go into start button(REDHAT ICON) >extras > server settings > Samba configuration to get to swat.....

The reason I feel most people have trouble setting up samba-swat in this room USERS ARE using a purchased Redhat 8.0.
Why'll I'm using a distro copy which probably doesn't come with all the packages that the purchased copy does.

So what I'm telling you is the purchased copy has more programs to install then the base distro does.

Like an added incentive for buying Redhat 8.0.......

i loaded redhat 8 from the same disks on another system and did a server install with all the packages. swat was on that pc. why do you suppose that is?

Sorry my windows 2000 server classes get in the way of me answering a lot of questions. I forget a lot about linux and have to hunt down the specific answers to this linux box....

Its far easier to due the installation then it is to explain. Had to rewrite that posting probably 4 times. I do a lot of run on sentences and leave steps out..

Hopefully that explanation was not that bad.....

Well good luck on using samba keep in mind using Linneighborhood is far easier to use then Swat is.......
