SW for scrolling banner (Marquee)

I've done a bit of searching on this and have come up dry.
I know how to make animated gifs in GIMP.
What I am looking for is a way to automate the generation of a set of frames which will produce a scrolling image when put into an animated GIF.

To do it manually, I simply make a picture in a long strip and then repeatedly cut and paste to make the frames. Tedious---therefore I am motivated to find a way to automate the process.

Some Windows tools SOUND like they can do this, but have not found a Linux solution.

thanks

This still requires user interaction, so it isn't totally automated, but it will do most of the work for you. This tutorial will tell you how to install and use the GAP set of plugins for Gimp to create a GIF animation.
