My issue is that I removed SuSEfirewall2 to clear the rules and configs because I messed them up so badly experimenting (aka learing) but when I went to "re-install" from YAST the SuSEfirewall2 package was no longer listed... then I downloaded the noarch.rpm from ftp.suse.com/pub/.... and installed the rpm from the console. The configs are there but the rules are not initializing nor starting. So insight as to how I may have messes things up (again ) would be great.
I used rpm -i filename to install the new rpm
I have configured the rules from the sysconfig editor
so how can I get a status on the firewall, is there are way similar to sh /etc/rc.d/SERVICE_NAME status ? for SuSEfirewall2?
Thanks, Ash
PS If I someone tells me to read the "unofficial SuSEfirewall2 faq" again I will scream!!!! I have it printed in color and bound with many notes... but I find it just a copy of the config explanations. But what do I know
How did you remove the firewall? It's possible that if it wasn't taken off cleanly, it won't go back on again. Do you still have the install cds? Maybe you can install it from there.
If I go to yast2 and "install remove software" I can see it so I have selected it (little trash can) then Apply. Then I am taken back to the "software" menu. If I return to the "install remove software" option and do a search for "susefirewall" I get nothing.
Is my installation path messed up? should I try and re-install it from the RPM I got from the SuSE site? If it re-installs again what are the RUNLEVEL settings?
I'm not sure what version of SuSE you are using but I decided to try and uninstall it on my system and it uninstalled then reinstalled fine. Where are you searching for "susefirewall"? Were you able to select it again for reinstallation or were you unable to find it in the package list?
I was unable to find it from the package list. So I downloaded it from a SuSE mirror server. SuSEfirewall2-3.1-67.noarch.rpm
I installed it via KDE -> konquerer -> package manager util
"install package via YaST"
it seems to install correctly but in runlevel editor no run levels are set.
I should have to set the runlevels. b,3,5? just guessing
Also i did an online update, it had been a while, and my cd-roms quit mounting. I went through this fix... but the entries were already there.
"Solution
Insert the modules cdrom and ide-cd in the variable INITRD_MODULES in the file
/etc/sysconfig/kernel
To do this, open the YaST Sysconfig Editor. Select Base-Administration -> Common-Basics -> initrd_modules and insert both modules before the module ide-scsi. Be careful not to remove any of the modules listed, since they are necessary for booting.
Now, execute as root user the command mk_initrd
To do this, start a terminal program like konsole or xterm and log in as root user with the command su -. Then enter the command mk_initrd. If your boot manager is LILO, reinstall it with the command lilo -v. This does not apply for GRUB. From SuSE Linux 8.1 on, GRUB is the standard boot loader.
"
then I removed the unique keys and the system redetected them. But I still couldn’t mount them.
I am setting up SQUID as a proxy
I use webmin localy and if I need it remotely I open my router and change the ports on the router and webmin and restart it via SSH
I use SSH and SC
I will have a meager WEBSERVER for practice (APACHE)
I use OUTLOOK and Windows Up-date-util (internaly)
I am getting a Zaurus palm soon, but that will use SSH anyway.
I will post my FW rules soon, I am reading the unoffical FAQ now.
