SuSE to Ubuntu questions

Hi all.

I have a few of questions reguarding my SuSE to Ubuntu (Xubuntu) conversion. I'm not familair with Debian based systems. I've used/installed Transmeta/Slackware/RedHat/SuSE linux systems for the past 10 years. I'm trying to run Ubuntu on a desktop box that has been happily running SuSE 9.3 for the last year and a half (3D Video/Sound/etc all worked).

The Ubuntu documentation is geared for newbies. Google isn't much help either.

1) How/Where do I find out how to disable specific kernal drivers (IRDA/IPV6 etc.) The Ubuntu website solutions don't work (Yes, I wan't to save two seconds for every IPV6 timeout since my ISP doesn't support IPV6). How does a Debian based system manage the kernal drivers?

2) CUPS still hangs detecting a remote LPD/LP printer (the reason I was giving Ubuntu a chance on my desktop in the first place). Ubuntu sees the printer and won't save the settings. CUPS under SuSE worked, but then forgot the settings after awhile.

3) After two hours, I finally have my nvidia card recognized under Ubuntu (It seems slower than SuSE). GLX extensions installed. I have a 800x600 desktop
and can't see how to change it to a 1024x768 desktop. The xorg.conf file looks fine to me (All the different X monitor/screen settings look OK).

4) I didn't see Bluefish listed in the ubuntu packages. I can't get Warzone 2100 to run either because of a missing SDLNet package that isn't in my default repository. Are there seprate repositories outside of Ubuntu that I need to add to my server list?

Thanks in advance.

1) For kernel modules, you can blacklist them by adding a file in /etc/modprobe.d (any filename - all existing files in here will be read - I use my.blacklist), containing something like this (the example stops the pcspkr module from loading):
Code:

blacklist pcspkr
2) Cups is a mystery to me. I used the KDE printer management from control panel, and it worked OK for a local printer, I didn't try anything more sophisticated on my current machine. I did have an older machine running Ubuntu and working as a print server using CUPS to share the printer. I seem to recall having to edit a file somewhere in /etc/cups to make it broadcast the printer to the LAN, and then do the same on the client to make it see the printer... sorry I can't be more specific.

3) WFM with 1680x1050 out of the box. Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors (grep for EE) and warnings (grep for WW). Maybe post your xorg.conf?

4) Bluefish is in the universe repository. In synaptic go to Settings [menu] -> Repositories, and enable the Universe repo, then reload package info (button on the main window, and search again.

Got it. I had to run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (After installing the nvidia driver).

Got it. I had to point my repositories to "Main". For some reason the US repository doesn't have these applications.

Thanks,
