SuSE the forgetful operating system?

I'm using SuSE 9 pro with the version of KDE which came with it (I think it's 3.2?)

The first problem I have is using the KDE menu editor. When I try to add or modify a menu item, it occasionally works as it should, but more often it either doesn't change anything at all, or it totally loses the command or group which I have changed.

The next problem I regularly face is with file associations. When I click on a file of a type which is not currently associated with any program, I get a box listing possibel programs to open it with and I select a program, and tell it to remember which program to open it with in future. In the vast majrity of cases, it will have forgoten what I told it to do before the next time I click on a file of that type! It also rarely remembers changes I have made to file associations through the Konqueror options window, or by right clicking a file and selecting "Edit File Type..."

I run SuSE 9 pro on two different machines, so I know it's definitely not just a bug on one machine.

Is this just SuSE that forgets things so easily, or are all Linux distributions like this? At times it's so bad that my computer is virtually unusable! I'd also be interested to know if there are any ways of solving these problems.

SuSE 9.0 comes with KDE 3.1.4, SuSE 9.1. comes with KDE 3.2.1. Make sure that you get the latest patches from YOU. Small bugs as those are quickly fixed.

You could, alternatively, create a new user to see if the problems get fixed. Sometimes, things just go bad with any OS.

The problem you are having with menus and associations is a very similar problem that Mandrake 9.2/KDE users were having in the past (which also used KDE 3.1, mind you).

I've been playing around with Linux and other *nix flavors for a while and, currently, I see no better alternative for me then SuSE 9.1 and 8.2. I just think it's the best rpm based distro out there.

Indeed, opinions, as preferences for girls, varies (I personally love Blondie's or light-brown hair chicks...lol).

I've found this:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=216520

Similar problems to yours and Fedora Core 2. So it's more a KDE problem then a distro itself. Mind you that I'm running SuSE 9.1 Pro with KDE and I've not had such problems yet. Crossover Office and CedegaX can even add games/Applications to the menu without a single problem for me

Regards!

for the file associations, right click the file and select properties. Then on the left side of the popup, you should see an icon that looks like a wrench. click on it. from this window you can choose the preferred application order. delete all but the program you want associtated with that file type. hope this helps.

I have verified at least one of those issues. The one where if you modify a menu group the group becomes unavailable.

Thanks, I will try to upgrade KDE, and see what happens.

Anyone got any idea which KDE packages I need to upgrade? There seem to ba meny different packages available from the mirror sites, and I can't tell which ones I need to upgrade to solve this problem.

Just wondering whether you managed to fix the forgotten file associations problem...

I'm getting this problem now with Konqueror on Mandrake 10 (KDE 3.2), but on another box where I've always compiled KDE myself from vanilla sources, I have never had this problem. I was thinking it might be a Mandrake-specific bug till I found this thread.

There is also a bugzilla entry, which at least proves we are not alone!
