Unhappy SuSE, no sound

Why oh why is it so difficult to get sound working in Linux? I have just installed SuSE 8.2. My TV card works, but no sound. Previously I had RH 9 and no TV, but sound after a long battle.

Can Anyone help me to get my sound working on SuSE 8.2 I am using an Intel 8x0 driver as it is an AC'97 onboard. Everything in SuSE is seeing the card, but there is no sound. Not even system sounds.

Have you checked the volume? Some sound drivers (notably ALSA) mute the sound card when the driver is loaded.
