suse linux ntl
 

can someone tell me how to set up my internet connection using yast for suse linux 7.3 with my ntl connection. i'm from the uk using ntl broadband if that helps. its just that i don't know what to put in the boxes for the configuration so if someone coud tell me what to do or give me a link to a guide which could help me then i would be grateful.

well, you'ev got the terayon cable modem i take it? well, stuff yast.

the usb connection is for windows, and more hasle than it's worth in either case. connect the ethernet socket on the modem to the new ethernet card you've got... you have got a new ethernet card i presume? good. connect that up, and then just set that interface for a dhcp connection. that's it. you can probably do that in yast i guess, in whch case you don't need to put anything in the boxes, just select dhcp from wherever,

if' you've only got 1 ethernet card instaqlled, then it'll be eth0, so you can just edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to say
DEVICE="eth0"
ONBOOT="yes"
BOOTPROTO="dhcp"

did as you said except editing "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0" and i didn't do this because there isn't a directory on my comp with that name.
also when i did the configuration using yast i got this error:
"no ip address were assigned. try again?" and then when i tryed again i got the same response. so i choose no for the third time.

when i asked for the help with the kinternet it said this:
"could not connect to local server. maybe you group are not a member of the group dailout."

anyone help?

oh yeah, and when i was installing using yast the list which yast has for the network cards doesn't have my card which is a "netgear 10/100 mbps pci ethernet network card" model fa311.
but this model is listed at:

so is it my card at fault

well, it's a hardware level thign still, yes. but i've no experience of netgear cards at all, as to wether it's supported or not. personally i'd recommend getting a generic realtex 8139 card. very cheap, very standard, very supported. http://www.eclipse-computers.com really good shop btw.

but your card should be suppotrted really... i'm sure it is, i think the driver is natsemi.o

yeah it is natsemi, so is my card should be supported? anyway are u sure "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0" is the correct address as i can't find that on my machine. anyother ideas of what else might be wrong? anyway thanks for the help so far

okay all it says now is that there is no provider so all i need to do is put in the hostname and dns i think. do you know where i can get the server address and the dns of my isp. here's its site but it doesn't help much http://www.ntlworld.com/help/settings.htm

it asks me for the domain name and the hostname so can someone tell me where i can find that out. sorry for spamming i just want to get this working

heh, sorry, i've been busy.

you don't need ANY ANY ANY ip's or anything. the modem is connected to a local network, which has a DHCP server near it (in that green box down the road i think). you just need to configure your ethernet card properly, and set it to dhcp, that's it i promise. check the ethernet howto.

you can call your hostname and domain name what ever you want, it's irrelevant for the conenction.

ntl are bastards btw ;-)

i've been through the installation again and theses are the two errors i get

"no ip address were assigned. try again?" and u get the same response

also
"no errors occoured during saving configuration. no ip addresses assigned device eth0 is not running" so i'm guessing i've got the wrong modem.

and all ip's are bastards but at least NTLn't as bad as BT

got it working at last. i'm not sure what it was but its working so i don't care. i was trying to connect using kinternet and it wasn't working but asoon as i used konqueror as my browser it worked. anyway big thanks to ;) bluecadet and :) rshaw for helping me out. cheers boys!
