SuSe hanging

Hello All,
I am new to using SuSe. I have a system that is running SuSe and it has been freezing up. The only thing that can be done to get it back is a power cycle. Is there anyway to get more info about what is going on? I check var/messages but there is nothing helpful. Is there a way to get a dump when this happens? I would imagine there is a way to get more info about what is causing my problems than just looking at the messages file. Thanks for your help.

I have been getting slight hang on my SuSE system as well. One solution that I have not tried yet would be to make sure DMA is enabled.

I will try this when I get home and let you know....

I've spent the past 4 days working on and looking for help on my particular hard freeze problem on an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo.

If you have any nforce2 chipset motherboard, there is a timing problem in the linux kernel.

My original distribution was Mandrake, then SUSE locked up on me too. Mandrake crashed hard enough this past weekend to destroy my root partition. After testing a lot, I originally thought it was an IDE driver problem because I could reliably reproduce the problem by running a 'fsck.ext3 -vcc /dev/hda1' after booting off of a knoppix linux on CD. However, it turns out the problem is with timing of interupts etc with the nforce 2 chip set and the linux kernel.

See the following link for a better description and links to patches and work arounds:

Hope this helps,

-Scott
