Theoretically your box may not be able to handle SUSE 9 (i.e. it is very old). Otherwise there are only really two main concerns:
1)The burned image on the disk you have was corrupt, or burning corrupted the disc. This means that you simply need to re-download the SUSE 9 CD 1.iso and reburn it (possibly at a lower speed). If that doesn't work for you then...
2)There is probably a good reason a modern distro like SUSE doesn't detect, or incorrectly detects, some of your hardware.
Really, what we need is more information (for example, what version of SUSE 9.x and where exactly in the installer does it hang, what other methods did you try to fix it.. whatever). If you can get us some more information, we can probably help.
Best of luck though.

As an additional tip to add to suggestion #1 above, once you download the ISO, be sure to check the MD5SUM to confirm that the image itself is valid before burning it to CD. If the MD5SUMS don't match exactly, then there's no point wasting a CD.
Additionally, when you burn the ISO to CD, you need to burn it as an image -- you can't burn it as a regular data file or via drag-and-drop.
