suse 9: upgrading to glib 2.4 (and gimp2.0)

Well I currently have glib-1.2.10-482 installed on my system and I want to upgrade this to 2.4.x (mainly so I can run gtk+- 2.4 and then upgrade to gimp 2.0)

How should I go about doing this? Do I need to first remove the older version of glib or can they both exist at the same time. Or am I going about this all wrong, is there an easier way to upgrade everything?
