SuSE 9 and mplayer 0.92

Hello I'm having problems installing MPlayer on SuSE 9. More accurately I can install mplayer but I cannot get the gui to work. I installed the player from source and ran into problems with gtk and glib. I resolved the problem by using the prefixes ./configure --enable-gui --with-gtk-config=/opt/gnome/bin --with-glib-config=/opt/gnome/bin
Then ./configure comes with the following output;
Config files successfully generated by ./configure !

Install prefix: /usr/local
Data directory: /usr/local/share/mplayer
Config direct.: /usr/local/etc/mplayer

Byte order: Little Endian
Optimizing for: athlon-xp mmx mmx2 3dnow 3dnowex sse mtrr

Enabled optional drivers:
Input: streaming tv-v4l edl tv cdda mpdvdkit2 vcd
Codecs: qtx xvid libdv libavcodec real xanim dshow/dmo win32 libvorbis liblzo gif
Audio output: alsa9 oss mpegpes(dvb)
Video output: xvidix vesa gif89a jpeg png mpegpes(dvb) fbdev opengl dga xv x11 dfbmga directfb
Disabled optional drivers:
Input: tv-bsdbt848 dvdnav dvdread dvdcss smb
Codecs: opendivx libmad
Audio output: sgi sun esd arts dxr2 nas win32 sdl
Video output: bl zr dxr3 dxr2 directx sdl svga aa ggi xmga mga tdfxfb 3dfx

'config.h' and 'config.mak' contain your configuration options.
Note: If you alter theses files (for instance CFLAGS) MPlayer may no longer
compile *** DO NOT REPORT BUGS if you tweak these files ***

'make' will now compile MPlayer and 'make install' will install it.
Note: On non-Linux systems you might need to use 'gmake' instead of 'make'.

Please check mtrr settings at /proc/mtrr (see DOCS/video.html#mtrr)

Check configure.log if you wonder why an autodetection failed (check whether
the development headers/packages are installed).

If you suspect a bug, please read DOCS/bugreports.html.

Then I do make and get the following error;
gcc: ./configure:: No such file or directory
gcc: line: No such file or directory
gcc: 1:: No such file or directory
gcc: /opt/gnome/bin:: No such file or directory
gcc: is: No such file or directory
gcc: a: No such file or directory
gcc: directory: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [depend] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/gbj/MPlayer/MPlayer-0.92'
make: *** [version.h] Error 2

Can anyone point out to me what the problem is? Has anyone gotten MPlayer to work with a gui in SuSE 9? I have tried using rpm's that I got from http://packman.links2linux.org/ but still there is no gui.

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated..

You need to install gcc and probably a host of other development packages. gcc is the GNU Compiler Collection (originally GNU C Compiler but now it supports other languages than C), which is used to compile programs.

Upon re-reading the error messages there seems to be something fishy...make complains about something that:
./configure line 1: /opt/gnome/bin: is a directory
...only that the above words came one line at a time. Hehe.

Try using --with-gtk-config=/opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config instead.

How about...

./configure --enable-gui --with-gtk-config=/opt/gnome/bin/gtk-config --with-glib-config=/opt/gnome/bin/glib-config instead... so it fixes both problems at once?

i found a rpm made for SuSE 9, but it complains about some dependencies:

libxvidcore.so2
w32codec
faad2
libmp3lame.so.0

I have managed to find rpm's for faad2 and libmp3lame.so.0 so they are no longer a problem.
I have also found tar's for win32codecs and xvidcore
did ./configure>make>make install on the xvidcore but it didn't install *.so.2 but *.so.4.0...so that didn't help...
win32codecs doesn't contain configure file...just a lot of dll's...don't know where to place them....

maybe someone knows where I can find the last missing dependencies libxvidcore.so2 & w32codec??

The reason SuSE doesn't carry MPlayer could be that some software vendors claim the MPlayer project is obeyin following their licenses for drivers, etc. This has been a lengthy discussion in Debian mailing lists for quite some time now, so it's quite possible that the SuSE folks too have had second thoughts about distributing it.
