SuSe 9.1/Xine-Error: No Demux Plugin/ WMF, ASF, AVI, WMV.
I having no luck with Google on finding an answer to this. (Google is getting to Big :P )
Anyway, I am using SuSe 9.1 with the KDE 3.2 Desktop. I have been unable to play any windows based Video Formats using Xine and Kaffeine. Xine gives me a popup Error message whenever I try to play wmv, asf, avi, etc..... The error is:
- xine engine error -
There is no demuxer plugin available to handle "/location/file name.wmv"
Usually this means that the format was not recognized.
I then clicked on More... for more Details of the error (xine log viewer) and this is what is located under the Messages Tab:
xine: found demuxer plugin: Elementary MPEG stream demux plugin
xine: found input plugin : file input plugin
xine: found demuxer plugin: Elementary MPEG stream demux plugin
xine: found input plugin : file input plugin
xine couldn't find demux for >/home/user/Desktop/1.wmv<
xine: found input plugin : file input plugin
xine: found demuxer plugin: Elementary MPEG stream demux plugin
xine: found input plugin : file input plugin
Under the Plugin Tab of the xine log viewer it says it found the following from :/usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.0.0/
load_plugins: plugin /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.0.0/xineplug_dmx_mpeg_block.so found

lastly, Under the Plugin Tab of the xine log viewer it says:
load_plugins: skipping unreadable plugin directory /home/user/.xine/plugins.
Something else I should mention is that I went to: http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/
I downloaded the Latest Win32 codecpack (6.5 Mb) and extracted the files to /usr/lib/win32/
After doing so I was still unable to play these Windoze Video files in Xine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS: I added color to help make this post easier to read, hopefully.

Forget the xine on the SuSE CDs/DVDs
The version of xine supplied on the CDs/DVDs has beens stripped of features due to legal reasons - just forget about trying to get anything to work with it. Instead uninstall any xine related packages using YaST (kdemultimedia3-video-xine, kaffeine, totem, xine-devel, xine-extra, xine-lib, xine-ui) and then go to http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ and download and install the following packages: libxine1, w32codec, xine-ui. if you want encrypted DVD playback download and install libdvdcss package too. NOTE that libdvdcss, libxine1 must be installed BEFORE the other packages
ONLY after installing these new packages re-install kaffeine and/or if you want. I didnt bother since the xine-ui is quite good anyway.
hope that helps

It works fine on SUSE 9.1 -- I've just followed the same set of instructions.
Don't forget to set DMA on otherwise video playback will be jerky.
I had a minor problem that it wouldn't work unless I was root -- but that was because of my DVD setup -- I've got 3 DVD drives on my system and had permissions screwed up.
Works on my laptop as well
Added --ensure your DVD device is mounted and readable -- just use Konqueror to browse /MEDIA directory or whatever it is on your suystem.

Hi,
I had the same problem as FastFeet and followed the instructions given by ultrabeam16. The packages are installed, but I'm not able to run xine. Typing xine at the console yields an error message stating the command is not found. I've tried the full path as well with the same results. Here are the instances of xine that I've been able to find after the install;
~/Documents> whereis xine
xine: /usr/lib/xine /usr/share/xine
~/Documents> ll /usr/lib/xine/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 2004-07-09 11:36 plugins
~/Documents> ll /usr/share/xine
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 2004-07-09 11:36 libxine1
By now it goes without saying, I'm new to this and this is the first time I've tried to install anything. That being said, I can't help but think I'm missing something, can anyone offer some insight?

checking for xine on my box returns:
x@linux:~> whereis xine
xine: /usr/bin/xine /usr/lib/xine /usr/share/xine /usr/share/man/man1/xine.1.gz
so...let me ask you a stupid question: Did you install xine itself at all?
how did you install, using rpm or tarballs?
WMA, ASF, AVI, WMV play perfectly on my box since i installed the w32codecs...but not with xine.mplayer, kaffeine and other play well...so why don't you switch to mplayer?
check out this:

salbox,
I used rpm to install. I'm new to Linux and so not partial to xine, it's just what Suse came with. I'll give mplayer a try, as soon as I can get http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ to load.
I understood that kafeine used xine, so it's interesting that you can get wmv's etc to play with kaffeine and not xine.
Thanks for the suggestions.

ok, I've been trying to bring www.myplayerhq.hu up most of today with no luck. I'm not one to complain, especially when it's over something free, but what's the deal?

er, make that www.mplayerhq.hu
what's on that links2linux.de page? It's all German, and I can't understand what's there, or what you wanted me to see.

sorry otto,
for sending you on a german site. didn't pay much attention on that ! there are a lot of fresh rpms on the site and I linked you up for the xine rpms and xine-devel.
anyway, mplayerhq.hu is somehow down, but try this http://www4.mplayerhq.hu/
U only get tarballs from the hq so you have to configure and compile it...forget that as quick as it came to your mind!
If you are using SuSE follow this link:
http://packman.links2linux.de/?action=128
It brings you again to a german site, but that doesn't matter.u can choose from SuSE 8.1 to 9.1, just check that you take i686. On the bottom there are all packages you also need to install!!!
forget it if you don't use SuSE, otherwise consult rpmseek.com.

Late reply
I figured I had better reply to this, even though I moved on in distros.
Thanks ultrabeam16. It worked great.
