Question SuSE 8.2, can't compile a new kernel! Help!

Hi! I am trying to install vmware and got the following message:

The path "/usr/include" is a kernel header file directory, but it does not
contain the file "linux/autoconf.h" as expected. This can happen if the kernel
has never been built, or if you have invoked the "make mrproper" command in your
kernel directory. In any case, you may want to rebuild your kernel.

I can't find an autoconf.h file anywhere on my system nor can I seem to use the 'make mrproper' command, so I never used invoked it to my knowledge...

I'm a bit of a newbie, so please forgive me, but how do I configure SuSE Linux? I looked through YaST and couldn't find any compiler programs.

Thanks much!

Try copy e.g.
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-4-athlon.autoconf.h
to
/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-4/include/linux/autoconf.h

You may also need version.h and others.

Thanks!

I actually discovered I needed to install the source code from the install disc as well; the GCC compiler alone didn't do the job.

I've installed it.

Now comes a new problem; when I try to install an OS (Win2k or XP Pro) I keep getting errors saying vmware can't get the memory it needs (I have 1GB of RAM, what's the problem?!) I'll post that up as a separate and more detailed message tomorrow, unless you might know why this is happening?
